KMW Training Centers™ Website Goes Mobile

Punch. Kick. Click!

KMWTrainingCenters.com Goes Mobile!

KMWTrainingCenters.com Goes Mobile!

A few short months ago we quietly launched this website with a small group of bloggers made up of staff, instructors and members.  Since then, we’ve seen the traffic to this site grow immensely and wanted to make it more accessible and more mobile.

###

KMWTrainingCenters.com goes mobile!

In addition to synching the KMW Training Centers™ Class Schedules and Belt tests with your mobile device, you can now view this blog right from your mobile phone too – in a simple and clean layout.

This website now automatically detects if you are on a mobile phone and sends you directly to the mobile version of kmwtrainingcenters.com without skipping a beat.  But don’t worry, if you’d rather view the site in all of it’s full desktop glory, you can simply switch it back by scrolling down and clicking on the “desktop” link at the bottom of each page — But if you’re like me, then you only want to see the essential stuff on a cell phone anyway, so this new mobile version is just enough.

The mobile version features easy access to the most popular links on kmwtrainingcenters.com, including our blog, class schedules and about sections.  It also contains fewer graphics than the full website, allowing for a quick page load on your device.

Enjoy!

How to Synch the KMW Training Centers™ Class Schedules & Belt Tests with Your Mobile Device: Part 2

Part 2 in a series

Mobile devices these days can do it all, and fortunately, since we use Google Calendars to manage our Class Schedules and Belt Test Schedules online,  you can synch these schedules with your iPhone, Blackberry, Android or other device.  To help you get setup I thought it might be a good idea to share some tutorials with you.  To keep things simple we’ll focus on one smart phone/mobile device at a time. For this tutorial we’ll go over the steps on how to sync our class schedules with a Blackberry.  If you don’t have a Blackberry or want to skip ahead and learn more about your device, visit this link: http://www.google.com/mobile/sync/

A little about Google Sync:

This week’s mobile device: The Blackberry

There are basically two ways to sync our schedules with your Blackberry. The first is to sync our schedules with the calendar software on your computer, and then sync the calendar information to your Blackberry, using the computer as an intermediary.  The second way, and in my opinion the most appropriate way, is to synch our Schedules with the built-in calendar on your Blackberry using a FREE Google account. This tutorial will help you get setup with the “second way.”

Before we get started, here’s a list of requirements:

1.  You must have a Blackberry.  Do not attempt this with a rotary phone…unless your name is Kevin Lewis.

2. Backup your data. On most devices, Google Sync (which we’re about to install) uses the Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync® protocol. When setting up a new Exchange ActiveSync account on your device, existing data may be removed from your phone. Please make sure to back up before you set up Google Sync below.

3. You must have a google account to synch your Blackberry with a Google Calendar.
If you already have one, like an @gmail.com email address and are comfortable using that account as your calendar hub then you’re all set. If not,  you’ll need to create an account.

This account will act as the hub or intermediary when synching to your device.  Once this account is created visit the class schedules page (http://kmwtrainingcenters.com/class-schedules/) and select the calendars you wish to add to your account by clicking on the “+google calendar” button.

As shown below:

TIP: If you’re having trouble adding the google calenders to your google account on your Blackberry, try performing this step on your desktop.  Thanks for this tip Monica!! (KMW Training Centers™ • West LA – Front Desk Manager)

Ok, if you’ve met all the requirements above it’s time to say good-bye Edward Cullen screen saver, hello KMW Class Schedules!

Now, let’s  install “Google Sync” on your Blackberry:

1. Point your BlackBerry browser to: http://m.google.com/sync  – Once the page is open,  you’ll see a “Download Google Sync” link.
2. Click the jog wheel or BlackBerry menu button to open the menu, and select “Get link.” This will take you to a download page.
3. Click Download.

Installation will happen automatically upon the completion of the download. After installation, you can find the Google Sync icon on your home screen. To start using Sync:

1. Click the icon (you’ll see a screen with a login form).
2. Move the cursor to the login section, and type the full email address of your Google Account and your password.
3. Press Login, and Google Sync will sign in to your account. Once you’re successfully signed in, please read the information on the Welcome screen carefully. If you wish, you can make changes to the default settings by clicking on the scroll wheel and selecting Options from the menu. Both Calendar and Contacts syncing are enabled by default for new users.
4. Click the Sync Now button at the bottom of the Welcome screen.

The initial synchronization will take some time, depending on the number of schedules you have in your Google Calendar account. Please be patient; you can allow the synchronization to take place in the background as you perform other tasks on your BlackBerry device.

Congratulations! You’ve set up Google Sync!
To use Google Sync, click the Google Sync icon on the home screen of your BlackBerry. Alternatively you can open the calendar application on your BlackBerry and click the thumb wheel once to pop up the menu. You’ll find the “Google Sync” entry at the top of the menu

Google Sync also lets you adjust your preferences from your Blackberry’s calendar application:

  1. Go into your calendar, and hit the menu button
  2. Select “Google Sync” from the menu options
  3. Press the menu button again
  4. Select “options”

The window you see now will let you choose when to sync (automatic vs. manual), whether your Blackberry should override your Google Calendar on conflicts (or visa versa), and for which period your appointments will be synced (the next 4, 8, 16, or 24 weeks).

If you use multiple calendars in Google Calendar, you can also choose which ones to synchronize.

Stay tuned for next weeks tutorial to learn how Kevin Lewis sent a text message from a rotary phone.
